Small Talk Coach

FAQ

How does Small Talk Coaching work?
Learning how to talk comfortably to people is a skill, just like learning to ride a bicycle. Using instructional materials combined with individual coaching and role-playing, Rich will teach you how to master conversations with people, in easy, comfortable steps. Rich will learn about you and your specific goals, and then develop an individualized plan to help you learn to have comfortable conversations and small talk with people, at your own pace.

How much does this cost?
Small Talk Coaching is designed to be an affordable, short-term process. Individual 45-minute sessions with Rich cost $180, paid via a credit card on file, and most people can learn and practice these skills in 6-12 sessions or less. This means that for between a cost that is usually $1000-$2000 or less, you can make a real change in how you interact with people.

Is this considered therapy? Can I use my health insurance for this?
The answer to both of these questions is no. There are serious legal restrictions on providing psychotherapy across state lines, and while he is a licensed psychotherapist, Rich limits this practice to communications skills coaching. He does not perform diagnosis, treatment or ongoing therapy for mental health issues as a coach, allowing him to serve clients anywhere in the US. Note that for insurance reasons, he is restricted to working with clients in the United States.

If you suffer from a clinical issue such as social anxiety disorder, you should consult a licensed mental health practitioner in your area. Rich can suggest places to look for appropriate practitioners, and is happy to work cooperatively with your regular therapist upon request. Otherwise we respect your privacy and do not share information about your coaching with health care providers or insurance companies.

I already talk comfortably to people in many cases, but some specific situations are a challenge for me. Can this help?
Yes! Rich is happy to customize his coaching to your specific needs and goals. He is one of the world’s most widely-published experts on how to have difficult conversations in the workplace and elsewhere, and chances are very good he has seen and worked with your situation before.

How do we meet for coaching sessions?
Rich will meet with you via secure, online videoconferencing, using the same HIPAA-compliant tools that health care providers and psychotherapists use for telemedicine. You will need a reliable Internet connection, a personal computer or smartphone, and basic technology skills to do online coaching.

Can I include a family member or friend in my coaching sessions?
Yes! Having a support person to practice with can be a tremendous help, and one support person is welcome to join your sessions at no extra charge.
